BcalcOS uses XLibre instead of the X.Org display server supplied by Devuan.
Why XLibre?
XLibre provides a modern, actively developed X11 display server while maintaining compatibility with the existing X11 ecosystem.
XLibre brings continued development to areas such as graphics drivers, modesetting, compatibility, bug fixes, and security fixes. The project has also added features and improvements beyond the older X.Org codebase.
What does this mean for users?
For most users, very little changes.
XFCE, X11 applications, and familiar X11 configuration continue to work in the expected way. XLibre is designed to maintain compatibility with existing X11 clients, so applications generally do not need to know which X11 server is providing the display.
Why not simply use the Devuan default?
BcalcOS chose XLibre instead because we wanted to remain on X11 while using a display server that is still being actively developed.
This gives BcalcOS the combination we are looking for:
- XFCE and the established X11 desktop environment
- compatibility with existing X11 applications
- continued development of the X11 display server
- ongoing driver and graphics work
- a familiar graphical environment for BcalcOS users
