BcalcOS includes its own customized theme & icons: Quail GTK & Quail Icons.

Quail GTK

Quail GTK is based on Clearlooks-Phenix-Sapphire, a theme used in the Devuan desktop environment. BcalcOS redesigned its colors around the BcalcOS palette and made some adjustments to the Xfwm window decorations, including their size and spacing.

Quail Icons

Quail Icons is based on the Deepsea icon theme included with Devuan. Its colors have been adapted throughout to complement the BcalcOS palette.

Windows Manager

Quail GTK is also available as a selection under the windows manager.

Using Quail

For Release 1.3: Quail GTK and Quail Icons are available through the bcalcos–extra package which must be manually installed.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install bcalcos-extra

For Releases 1.3.5 & higher: bcalco-extra ships with the ISO so manual installation is not required.

Open Settings → Appearance in Xfce to select Quail GTK as the style and Quail Icons as the icon theme. The Quail window-manager appearance can be selected under Settings → Window Manager.

Origins & Attribution

Quail is a BcalcOS adaptation of existing free software artwork. BcalcOS modified the colors and, for the GTK/Xfwm theme, made additional window-decoration adjustments to create the Quail appearance. The underlying work is credited to its original creators and projects:

  • Clearlooks-Phenix: by Jean-Philippe Fleury, licensed under GPL-3+

  • Clearlooks-Phenix-Sapphire: a Sapphire variant developed for Devuan

  • Deepsea: an icon theme included with and modified for the Devuan desktop
